Winton Branch Library Partners/Volunteers Meeting June 19

Winton Branch Library Partners/Volunteers Meeting June 19

From Barbara Nichols:

It looks like summer weather has finally settled in, and I hope you’re all taking the time to enjoy it. We managed to dodge the bullet with our mild winter this past year. I’ve been around long enough to realize that we probably won’t get a repeat this time around, so I’m trying to be outside to soak up the summer as much as possible.

Because we’re into warmer weather, the library needs some volunteers for two outside projects:

We’ve been re-developing  the flower gardens around the library. Each year we’ve added more and this year we need one or two volunteers to help maintain them. Mostly this will be helping weed, but it may include shifting and re-planting. We have a great volunteer who heads up the garden project, but she could really use help. This would probably only be an hour or two occasionally, but it’s something the staff doesn’t have time for and the library really needs.

I was approached by another volunteer who offered to develop a nature trail on library land. She’s mapped the route out but needs some help working on it. Hopefully we can get some scouts involved, but we still need another adult to be involved with it.

(Book Sale) Meanwhile, discards and donations are piling up, and it’s time to plan for another book sale in the fall. We’ve tentatively set the date for October 12 and 13.  We’re hoping that the Winton Partners will take over this year; library staff can do some general oversight, but we really  need a volunteer from the community to coordinate the sale and volunteers who are willing to set up, unpack, staff the sale, and then pack up what’s left. You could volunteer for just an hour or for the whole sale. Every bit of time will help.

Because the sale would be sponsored by the Partners, you would get to decide what the money would be used for. In the past, other Friends groups have used book sale money to buy books and media for their library. Others have purchased educational toys for their children’s rooms. And yet others have supported pet projects like buying and maintaining an aquarium.

We’ll be holding a Winton Partners meeting next Tuesday, June 19 at 6:00.  The library closes at 6 on Tuesday. If you come after the library closes, open and close the book drop by the Atlantic Ave. entrance a few times. We’ll hear it in the library and send someone to let you in.

Crime Prevention Bulletin – May 2012

Crime Prevention Bulletin – May 2012

Dear Community Members,

The Rochester Police Dept would like to make you aware that there has been an increase in residential burglaries throughout the South East area in the past few weeks. In many cases, the burglar was able to enter the home through an unlocked window. With the warm weather approaching, I would like to remind all citizens to be certain to close and lock your windows, screens and doors whenever you are away from home or asleep.

In addition, please follow these crime Prevention Tips to reduce your chance of becoming a victim:

1.     Report to 911 immediately all suspicious activity such as persons loitering, going door to door, or the sound of glass breaking.

2.     Report any attempt to break into your house or garage, such as cuts on your window screens near the locks.

3.     Keep your doors, windows and garages locked when not at home (even when in the yard or at a neighbors).

4.     Install and use deadbolt locks on all exterior doors.

5.     Notify a neighbor when you are going to be away.

6.     Discontinue newspaper delivery when going on vacation.

7.      Keep outside lights on all night and use motion sensor lights all around your home.

8.     Trim shrubs to deny burglars a hiding place, especially shrubs around windows.

9.     Lock up ladders and trash toters where they cannot be used by a burglar.

10.   Don’t leave returnable cans etc. out for the “homeless”.

11.   Never open your door for a stranger.

Citizen Preparedness Program

Citizen Preparedness Program

Chief Sheppard asked that we share this training opportunity with you. It is FREE.

The Homeland Security Management Institute (HSMI) of Monroe Community College is offering a two-hour free training course entitled “Citizen Preparedness Program”.

Extreme events –droughts, wildfires, tornados, floods, heat waves, fierce storms and blizzards. Yet, the great majority of our citizens are not prepared to respond to natural disasters, man-made threats, or pandemic events.

The Citizen Preparedness Program is being offered with the goal of helping citizens preserve life and minimize injuries sustained in a disaster. The course is intended to train citizens on how to protect themselves and their families by knowing what to do before, during and after a disaster event.

National Night Out

National Night Out

Register Now for National Night Out 2012 – August 7th The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) has announced that the “29th Annual National Night Out (NNO)” program will culminate on Tuesday, August 7, 2012.

Any municipality, law enforcement agency, crime prevention organization, community group or neighborhood that is interested in participating is invited to contact NATW now to receive information on National Night Out 2012. (Note: The State of Texas will be celebrating NNO on October 2nd this year.)

There is no cost to register. Once registered with NATW, local coordinators receive an organizational kit full of ‘how-to’ materials including planning suggestions, sample new releases, artwork, and promotional guides – and interim updates throughout the year.

NNO 2011 involved over 37 million people in 15,325 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2012 is expected to be the largest ever. Once again this year, Target is a national corporate sponsor.

National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to:

(1) Heighten crime prevention awareness;
(2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
(3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
(4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most cities and towns celebrate National Night Out with a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, visits from local officials and law enforcement, safety fairs, and youth events.

Don’t delay! Organizing in most communities begins early in the year. For free registration material call 1-800-NITE OUT or visit the National Night Out website at www.nationalnightout.org.
