To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiographical novel was translated to film in 1962 by Horton Foote and the producer/director team of Robert Mulligan and Alan J. Pakula. Set in a small Alabama town in the 1930’s, the story focuses on scru-pulously honest, highly respected lawyer Atticus Finch, magnificently embodied by Gregory Peck. Finch puts his career on the line when he agrees to represent Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black manaccused of rape. The “Friends/Partners” are looking for new members. You don’t have to commit to large blocks of time or have any special skills to participate. We’re looking for people who would be interested in helping with some projects and joining with others who are interested in the library. Meetings are generally held the 3rd Tuesday of the month, starting at 6:30. Come around to the Atlantic door. Someone will be posted to let you in. If you can’t make the meetings but would like to participate, call Barbara Nichols at 428-8204.

This respectful adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the Spanish Civil War was one of the most sensational and popular films to come out of wartime Hollywood. Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman were Hemingway’s personal choices for the roles of Robert Jordan, the soldier of fortune who comes to blow up a Falangist bridge, and Maria, the brutalized peasant girl he falls in love with.
