Neighborhood Safety is a North Winton Village Association priority, supported by neighbors & merchants alike. Concerns for safety were the main reason the North Winton Village Association was formed many years ago.

Every day the neighborhood is busy with pedestrian traffic, either people walking their dogs, visiting with friends, shopping at local stores, enjoying the restaurants, or just out for exercise. Everyone wants to feel safe.

These outdoor activities encourage neighborhood interaction and an awareness of any unusual activity which can be reported to the Crime Committee and/or the Rochester Police Department.

History

The North Winton Village Neighborhood Safety Center came into existence February, 2008 with funding from Senator James Alesi’s legislative grant. The original idea for a presence on East Main Street was from RPD Commander James Sheppard, when the North Winton Village Safety and Code Violation Committee walked East Main Street for a couple of years with RPD and the City Code Inspectors attempting to mitigate drug problems and code violations. Many issues with landlords and property owners came up; Commander James Sheppard said, “You need to rent space and have a presence”. The NWVA was awarded a $7,000 grant to pay for rent and utilities from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services through Senator James Alessi’s District appropriations. This grant ended in March of 2009.

Purpose

Many people and/or organizations either in the past or the present use the Safety Center for their meetings to ensure a neighborhood connection on East Main Street. It has also been successful as a place for our police officers to have use of a computer, bathroom, coffee, and to eat their meals plus bring in suspects, etc.

The Safety Center has become the anchor of the East Main Street neighborhood revitalization efforts, trusted by neighbors, police, organizations and businesses, tenants and landlords in the area. This very important project remains a priority as it has become part of the East Main Street landscape.

Meetings

The North Winton Village Safety and Code Committee meets the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the North Winton Village Neighborhood Safety Center at 1933 East Main Street. Officers from the RPD often join us, and occasionally the city Code Enforcement Officers are also available.

The purpose of this meeting is to give all residents and businesses the opportunity to report any code violations, problems with crime in the neighborhood, concerns you might have about safety or crime problems, or to ask questions regarding these issues. We welcome your support and input, and encourage you to join the meeting. This is a priority of the NWVA, ensuring that our neighborhood is safe, clean and livable, and your input is vital to the ultimate success of this endeavor.

If you cannot make this daytime meeting, there will be a meeting once a month in the evening. Watch this website for notification of the meeting. You may also wish to discuss your concerns with NWVA Co-chair Mary Coffey at 482-1382 or email us.

The various grants that have supported the operating expenses of the Safety Center have expired, so we need your help to keep this office space. Part of the paid dues help defray costs; we would welcome any donations or fundraising events. Remember, this is your Safety Center, so please, help keep it in operation. The North Winton Village neighborhood is the safest in the city, according to the Rochester Police Department. Now the RPD has announced a partnership with CrimeReports, based in Utah. You can view this website at www.crimereports.com. According to the story July 22, 2011 in the Democrat & Chronicle , this web tool can show you where crime is in your area via map, using different icons for different crimes, and will also display where sex offenders live. Be prepared to provide a detailed description such as number of people, ages, description of appearance, description of vehicles and license plate numbers.
